Gran Alacant – city guide
Guide to Gran Alacant – Costa Blanca, Spain (current data)
Imagine a place where the sun shines 325 days a year, where crystal-clear sea meets beautiful sandy beaches, and picturesque hills stretch all around. Gran Alacant is exactly such a place – a charming town on the Spanish Mediterranean coast that has stolen the hearts of tourists and people looking for a second home in recent years.
1. Geographic location and climate
Gran Alacant is situated on a hill (120 m above sea level) on the Costa Blanca coast in eastern Spain, in the Valencia region. It is only 15 km south of Alicante and just 6 km from Santa Pola. This is truly a fantastic location! On one hand, you have proximity to larger cities, on the other – the peace of a seaside resort.
Good news for travelers – Alicante airport is only 11 km from Gran Alacant, which translates to about 15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus. Could you wish for a better location for a vacation getaway?
Climate? Typically Mediterranean – hot, dry summer and mild, slightly more humid winter. The average annual temperature is a pleasant 18°C. In summer, in July and August, you can expect temperatures reaching 30°C, and the sky is practically cloudless. In winter, in January, thermometers usually show around 15°C during the day.
When is the best time to visit Gran Alacant? Actually, it’s pleasant here all year round, but I recommend most:
- Spring (April-May) – when temperatures oscillate between 19-23°C and you can explore peacefully without crowds
- Autumn (September-October) – with temperatures of 21-27°C and sea warmed up after summer
- Summer (June-August) – for lovers of hot sun and intense beach relaxation
- Winter (December-February) – for those escaping from the harsh, northern climate of Europe
2. City demographic profile
Gran Alacant has undergone a remarkable demographic transformation. From a small settlement counting only 1012 inhabitants in 2000, it has grown to about 11,000 permanent residents currently. And during the summer season, this number increases significantly!
Interestingly, most residents are foreigners. Mainly British, Scandinavians, and representatives of other European countries. It used to be a typically seasonal place that was deserted in winter. Today? It’s a vibrant, year-round community.
Will you have problems communicating? Absolutely not! The official language is Spanish, and in the Valencia region also Catalan in the Valencian variant. But don’t worry – thanks to the international character of the town, English is commonly used in almost all shops, restaurants, and pharmacies.
3. General characteristics and first impressions
Gran Alacant is a place with a special character. Here life flows unhurriedly, in the rhythm of southern Spain. The atmosphere is calm, relaxing, ideally suited for relaxation. You won’t find the hustle and bustle of large resorts here, but you won’t be bored either.
The town consists of over 35 different urbanizations (residential developments), each with its own character. Apartments in Spain, especially in this area, are characterized by exceptional architectural style. White houses, cozy bungalows, semi-detached houses, and luxury villas surrounded by greenery and flowers predominate. Within the developments you’ll find swimming pools, playgrounds, sports fields, and green areas.
What particularly distinguishes Gran Alacant? Several things:
- Great location close to the airport and larger cities
- Beautiful sea views thanks to the hilltop location
- Access to Carabassi sandy beach
- Perfect conditions for water sports enthusiasts
- Safe area for families with children and seniors
- International, friendly atmosphere
History and cultural identity
1. Brief history of Gran Alacant
Unlike many Spanish towns, Gran Alacant has a relatively short history. The name comes from the first urbanization built in the upper part of the area around 1984. However, the real development boom occurred only in 1999-2002, when most of the existing developments were built.
Despite the short history of Gran Alacant itself, the Santa Pola region, to which it administratively belongs, has a past dating back to the 3rd millennium BC! Evidence of settlement from the Eneolithic era was found in the Carabassí Spider Cave, as well as remains of hunter-gatherers from the Upper Paleolithic.
Did you know that the region was under the influence of many cultures? Iberian, Roman (as Portus Illicitanus), Visigothic, Arab, and Christian. This cultural diversity shaped the rich character of the entire area.
2. Local traditions and customs
The contemporary culture of Gran Alacant is a fascinating mixture of international influences. The Santa Pola municipality authorities organize numerous cultural events integrating the community. In summer, festivals of music, dance, and circus take place, attracting both residents and tourists.
It’s worth mentioning the carnival, which is an important element of cultural life. In 2025, it is planned for February 28 at the International Library in Gran Alacant. The theme will be “Carnival at the bottom of the sea,” with workshops for making jellyfish costumes, a parade, and hot chocolate refreshments.
Gran Alacant is a true cultural melting pot – about 18% of residents are foreigners. To support intercultural integration, local authorities organize various courses and workshops – from Spanish language for foreigners, through language clubs, to creative workshops.
3. Architecture and urban planning
Gran Alacant developed as a complex of residential developments on a hill, between the Santa Pola mountain range and Carabassí beach. The buildings are mainly modern – snow-white houses, bungalows, semi-detached houses, and luxury villas surrounded by greenery.
Gated residential complexes usually offer comfortable amenities: swimming pools, playgrounds, sports fields, tennis courts, green areas, and service and catering facilities. One of the oldest urbanizations is Sierra Mar (1982-1989), and among the newest investments we find Amara (2022-2023) and Iconic (2021-2023).
A characteristic element of the landscape is the hilltop location, providing spectacular views of Alicante Bay. On clear days you can see both the Santa Pola lighthouse and Tabarca island, as well as Benidorm island. Sounds magical, doesn’t it?

Main tourist attractions
1. Most popular tourist sites
When planning your stay in Gran Alacant, you cannot miss a few absolutely must-see places. El Carabassi beach (Playa Carabassi) is the main beach of the town, characterized by fine, golden sand and crystal-clear water. It stretches for about 1.5 km in length and is an ideal place for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. The surrounding natural dune system creates a unique ecosystem and picturesque surroundings.
Nature lovers? Be sure to visit El Clot de Galvany – an extensive natural area of great ecological importance, covering over 366 hectares. This officially recognized nature park offers diverse ecosystems – from wetlands to pine forests. It’s home to many species of birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Two main tourist routes are marked out in the reserve, leading through natural ponds, wildlife observation points, and hills.
And one more absolute must-see – Tabarca island. It’s Spain’s smallest inhabited island, accessible by short cruises from the nearby port in Santa Pola. Once a refuge for Berber pirates, today it offers cobblestone streets, diving opportunities in turquoise waters, and rich underwater marine life. Really worth dedicating a day to this trip!
2. Scenic spots and viewpoints
Gran Alacant and the surrounding area abound in beautiful places where you can admire wonderful landscapes. The promenade in Arenales del Sol connects Arenales del Sol beach with El Carabassi beach and is extremely popular among walkers, cyclists, and runners. The wooden structures of the promenade harmoniously blend with the natural landscape of the dunes.
Along the coast you’ll also find a system of wooden platforms and paths enabling walks with sea views. These walkways – wooden paths leading through the dunes to the beach – allow access to the seashore without disturbing the delicate dune ecosystem.
Among the parks and public gardens, El Clot de Galvany also serves as a park with well-marked trails. At the nature education center, free guided tours take place on Sundays and holidays.
If you’re looking for viewpoints, be sure to visit Mirador del Far de Santa Pola. This viewing platform over 100 meters long offers spectacular views of the sea and nearby Tabarca island. Next to it is an active lighthouse built in 1858 on the site of a former 16th-century defensive bastion.

The park is divided into 5 large sections, including a pool, water slides, children’s pool, lighthouse, and spa. It also offers sea lion shows and education about marine fauna and flora conservation.
An interesting proposition is also Tabarca Water Taxi – exciting wave rides, running hourly. While Acuario Municipal is an amazing museum where you can admire fascinating marine creature species.
4. Secular and religious monuments
Although Gran Alacant itself is not rich in historical monuments, surrounding towns offer many interesting objects. Castillo de Santa Bárbara (Santa Barbara Castle) in Alicante, located on Benacantil hill, dates from the 9th century. From its walls stretches a panoramic view of the city and coast.
The Archaeological Museum in Alicante (MARQ) is a modern museum that presents the rich history of the region, from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The exhibitions are interactive and educational, ideal for the whole family.
In the Clot de Galvany reserve you can find historic military bunkers and trenches from the Spanish Civil War. These remains are an interesting historical element during trips through the reserve.
As for religious monuments, it’s worth visiting the Basilica of Santa María in Elche, located about 20 km from Gran Alacant. Built on the ruins of a mosque, it has Gothic-Baroque architecture and richly decorated interiors.
An interesting fact is Misteri d’Elx – a traditional medieval religious mystery performed every year at the Basilica of Santa María in Elche, inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list.
Beaches and water activities
1. Most beautiful beaches in the city and surrounding area
Gran Alacant and its surroundings on the Costa Blanca are famous for picturesque beaches marked with the Blue Flag, which testifies to their high quality. Playa del Carabassí is the true showcase of Gran Alacant – over a kilometer strip of golden sand surrounded by protected dunes and pine forests. Thanks to a system of wooden walkways protecting the dunes, it’s one of the few areas in Spain where the unique dune ecosystem remains intact.
Slightly to the north you’ll find Playa El Altet with modern infrastructure and a peaceful atmosphere. A wide beach with a gentle descent to the water is ideal for families with children, and warm winds often favor kitesurfing and windsurfing.
For water sports enthusiasts, Tamarit beach in Santa Pola is a true paradise – excellent wind conditions and a developed equipment rental base attract kitesurfing lovers from the entire region.

3. Seafront promenades and marinas
The Gran Alacant coast has been complemented with modern promenades and marinas that facilitate access to beaches and create spaces for walks and relaxation. The newly opened fourth seafront passage at Playa del Carabassí is a wooden walkway leading through the dunes, enabling free walking without damaging the unique ecosystem.
Longer walking trips can be taken along Arenales del Sol beach, where the promenade connects with a network of cycling routes and viewing benches – it’s a popular walking spot at sunset.
Around the main beaches, rest zones equipped with benches and gazebos are designated, and at parking lots there are information points with maps and bathrooms adapted for people with disabilities.
Marina Miramar in Santa Pola offers a comfortable waterfront with restaurants and cafes, where you can watch yachts and boats while using port infrastructure such as viewpoints and walking piers.
Gastronomy and nightlife
1. Cuisine of the Valencia region and Gran Alacant specialties
Gran Alacant, as part of the Valencian Community, offers an extremely rich culinary world. The cuisine of this region belongs to the most valued in Spain, known for its Mediterranean character, based on fresh vegetables, seafood, and meat.
The most famous dish is of course paella – the traditional Valencian version is prepared with chicken, rabbit, green beans (ferradura), lima beans (garrafon), tomatoes, peppers, and rice. Everything is cooked in a special flat dish called a paellera. Tradition dictates eating paella with a wooden spoon or directly from the dish.
Another popular dish is arroz a banda, originating from the province of Alicante. It’s a typical fishermen’s dish, prepared with rice cooked in fish stock. It’s also worth trying other specialties:
- Arròs negre – black rice with squid and its ink
- Fideuà – similar to paella, but with thin pasta instead of rice
- Arròs al forn – baked rice with sausage, chickpeas, and potatoes
- All i pebre – traditional eel stew seasoned with paprika and chili
The Valencian region is also famous for the production of excellent wines that perfectly complement local cuisine. In recent years, the quality of bottled wines has significantly improved while maintaining affordable prices. You can try red, white, sparkling (cava), and sweet wines of local production.
The coastal location of Gran Alacant means that seafood occupies a special place in local cuisine – from clóchinas mussels to octopus cooked in paprika sauce (pulpo a la gallega).
2. Where to eat – from tapas bars to restaurants
Gran Alacant offers a wide selection of dining establishments – from exquisite restaurants to affordable bars. For gourmets with a larger wallet I recommend:
- Ohana GastroBar – highly rated restaurant serving excellent steaks

- Alonai Restaurant – exquisite dishes based on Mediterranean diet
In the medium price range, it’s worth visiting La Paletta (Mediterranean cuisine), El Olivo (authentic Spanish flavors), or The Flavour Restaurant (combining the best dishes from different cuisines).
There’s also no shortage of options for budget travelers – Restaurante Asiático Cielo Largó offers affordable Asian cuisine dishes, The Chippy serves British fish & chips, and Zest is a pleasant cafe ideal for breakfast or a light meal.

The main shopping center in Gran Alacant is Centro Comercial Gran Alacant, also known as GA Center. Located at the entrance to Gran Alacant from the N-332 road, this center has been serving residents and tourists for years, offering a wide selection of shops, restaurants, and services on two levels.
The shopping center includes popular supermarkets Mercadona and Consum, where you can buy groceries and everyday items. Interestingly, the first hotel in Gran Alacant is being built nearby, which will also offer additional retail space (about 1500m²) and underground parking.
Unlike typical cities, Gran Alacant does not have clearly defined shopping streets. The town has a residential character, and shops and boutiques are scattered throughout the area. In addition to shops in the shopping center, in Gran Alacant you’ll also find various clothing boutiques, shoe stores, and several large Chinese supermarkets.
In Gran Alacant itself there are no dedicated outlets, however, in Alicante 15 km away there is an outlet center with over 40 stores of well-known brands such as Adidas, Nike, Guess, Levi’s, or Bimba y Lola.

The main marketplace in Gran Alacant is the street market (mercadillo) held every Thursday at Avenida de Escandinavia from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The market offers about 90 stalls with various products – from fresh food to clothing and souvenirs.
It’s a great place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, homemade products, clothes, ceramics, and souvenirs. Street markets in Spain enjoy great popularity among both local residents and tourists, as you can buy local products at attractive prices.
It’s worth knowing that regular markets are also held in nearby towns. In Santa Pola, markets are organized on Mondays at Avenida de Albacete. The entire Costa Blanca offers markets for every day of the week, so even if you can’t be in Gran Alacant on Thursday, you can always visit a market in another nearby town.
3. Local handicrafts and souvenirs
Although there is no specific information about souvenirs characteristic exclusively of Gran Alacant, at the local Thursday market you can find various souvenirs typical of the Costa Blanca region.
The best place to buy authentic local products is the weekly market at Avenida de Escandinavia. It’s also worth visiting the Dialprix store, which offers a wide range of international products from Great Britain, Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway, and also has its own delicatessen department.
If you’re interested in local artistic crafts, consider a trip to nearby Alicante, where you’ll find shops offering traditional handicrafts and antiques. Recommended places include Cerámica Roque with traditional ceramics or artist Jenny Anne Morrison’s studio, who creates unique works of art.

Formally, long-term rental in Spain requires signing a lease agreement, which usually lasts a minimum of 6 months, and typically 12 months with the possibility of annual renewal. The agreement should be in writing, specify the amount of rent, payment date (usually by the 7th of the month), deposit amount, and the rights and obligations of both parties.
A few tips regarding rental:
- Always sign a written lease agreement, especially if you don’t speak Spanish fluently
- Check if the agreement includes a minimum rental period (usually 6 months)
- Make sure the agreement clearly specifies the rent payment date and deposit amount
- Pay attention to clauses regarding early termination of the agreement

Clot de Galvany, a 366-hectare nature reserve, is a true treasure of nature. It’s famous for unique dune formations – the largest in Alicante province – and rich fauna, including herons, storks, and endemic mushroom species. The lack of hunting in this area also favors the rabbit population.

Calendar of events
1. Main festivals and celebrations
Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires of St. John) is one of the most spectacular festivals in the region, recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. It is celebrated mainly in Alicante on June 19-24, but its elements can also be seen in the Gran Alacant area.
The most important elements of this festival are huge figures made of cardboard and wood (hogueras), which are ceremonially burned at midnight on June 24. In the days preceding the main celebrations, colorful parades, flower offerings, bullfighting festivals, concerts, and all-night street parties take place. Every day at 2:00 PM at Plaza de los Luceros there are spectacular firework displays called “mascletas.”
Carnival on the Costa Blanca is a week of colorful and joyful celebrations preceding Lent (in 2025: February 27 – March 4). Cities such as Alicante and Benidorm organize impressive parades with live music, light shows, and fireworks. The culmination is “Entierro de la Sardina” (Burial of the Sardine) – a satirical ritual ending the carnival.
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is one of the most important religious festivals in Spain. Processions begin on Palm Sunday and are organized by cofradías (religious brotherhoods), which prepare for them for many months. Religious figures depicting scenes of the Passion are carried through the streets, accompanied by choirs and faithful in traditional attire.

Tips and advice from local residents
1. Where to find the real Gran Alacant
Gran Alacant hides many gems that often escape the attention of the average tourist. Carabassí beach with its golden sands and crystal-clear water is the favorite place of local residents, where you can experience peaceful relaxation on the Mediterranean Sea.
Clot de Galvany Nature Park is a true treasure for nature lovers. This untouched area teems with wildlife and offers picturesque hiking trails. For the active, the walking route to the Santa Pola Lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the coast.
One of the most characteristic customs of the region is “tardeo” – the time between the end of lunch and dinner, intended for afternoon social gatherings with tapas and drinks. It’s an excellent opportunity to blend into the local community.
Residents of Gran Alacant and the surrounding area use local expressions that are a mixture of Spanish and Valencian. Words such as “achavo” (expression of surprise), “chopar” (to get wet), or “terreta” (designation of Alicante) will certainly be useful in conversations with locals.
How to avoid tourist traps? Avoid eating in restaurants directly at the main tourist attractions. Look for places offering “menu del día” (menu of the day), which is not only more economical but often better represents local cuisine.
2. Saving during your stay
If you plan to explore the region, it’s worth considering purchasing the Valencia Tourist Card, which offers free access to public transport and discounts on various attractions. Current promotions include discounts on public transport trips financed by local authorities.
Gran Alacant has a well-developed public transport system that is both convenient and economical. A bus ticket to Alicante costs only €1.70 (as of August 2024), making it an extremely affordable way to explore the area.
To save on food, look for restaurants offering “menu del día” – a lunch set at an attractive price. For example, the Buenísimo restaurant offers an excellent menu del día at a very good price. Among recommended economical options you’ll find restaurants such as Restaurante Asiático Cielo Largó, Zest, The Chippy, or Nankin II.
Remember that lunch (comida) is the most important meal of the day in Spain and is usually eaten around 2:00 PM or later. Adapting to this rhythm will allow you not only to save but also to better integrate with the local community.
3. Etiquette and social customs
Knowing a few basic phrases in Spanish and Valencian can significantly facilitate your stay:
- “Hola” (hello)
- “Gracias” (thank you)
- “Por favor” (please)
- “Buenos días” (good morning)
- “Buenas tardes” (good afternoon)
- “Buenas noches” (good night)
The meal schedule in Spain differs from that in Poland:
- Desayuno (breakfast): 7:00-9:00 AM – usually light, consisting of coffee and bread
- Almuerzo (second breakfast): 10:30-11:30 AM – for many Spaniards this is the second meal of the day
- Comida (lunch): around 2:00 PM or later – the most important meal of the day
- Merienda (afternoon snack): around 5:00 PM – light snack
- Cena (dinner): around 9:00 PM or later – usually lighter than lunch
Contrary to popular belief, siesta is not as common in Spain as it seems – about 60% of Spaniards never practice it. However, many shops and businesses still close between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, especially in summer months.
Tipping in Spain is not mandatory, but is welcome as an expression of gratitude for good service. In restaurants, usually 5-10% of the bill is left, hotel porters 1-2 euros, and for taxi drivers it’s enough to round up the amount or add 1-2 euros.
In terms of behavior, Spaniards value sociability and often spend long hours on meals and conversations. Don’t rush during meals and enjoy the slow pace of life that is characteristic of Mediterranean culture.
